Starbucks working with Yahoo to offer website with coffee shop's own content

Starbucks Inc., hoping to leverage its recent decision to offer free Wi-Fi at its stores, is working with Yahoo Inc. to create a website that would be customized for each location.
In addition to The New York Times, USA Today, Yahoo and Zagat, Starbucks announced on Thursday that publisher Rodale, Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. Boost and online charity DonorsChoose.org will also be contributing content providers for its Starbucks Digital Network. The website is expected to go live this fall.
Customers who access the Internet at Starbucks will encounter the website first before they can surf the web. Starbucks began offering unlimited, free Internet access last month at all 6,800 U.S. company-operated stores.
If customers opt to stay on Starbucks' home page, they'll have access to things such as free iTunes downloads and content on paid sites such as the Wall Street Journal. There’s also an optional "sign in" to the MyStarbucks account, a Yahoo search box and six channels of topics---news, entertainment, wellness, business and career, my neighborhood, Starbucks -- based on localized content for that store’s neighborhood.
“Because we know what store you’re in, we can give you hyper-local news,” said Adam Brotman, vice president of the Starbucks unit that oversees the company’s digital ventures. “We want to provide something of value they can’t get anywhere else.”
In the "My Neighborhood" channel, for example, users can connect with and donate to local charities, and the "Wellness" section will show maps of local running and biking trails that, of course, highlight nearby Starbucks locations along the way.
Other businesses have already tapped into such content-specific networks. Barnes & Noble, Inc., for example, offers a special Wi-Fi network for its Nook e-readers where users have access to special content while in one of its stores.
And then there’s Gogo Inflight Internet, which partners with nine airlines to give passengers free access to the Wall Street Journal and Frommer’s Travel Guides -- after paying a fee starting at $5.
But Ross Rubin, analyst at NPD Group, said Starbucks' network would be unique because it would not be restricted to a specific device or content.
And to the best of his knowledge, Rubin said, Starbucks is the first of any coffee shop to do this.
“They certainly have the impact and the national footprint to enable it on a scale that would be difficult to match by any other coffee chain,” Rubin said.
The Seattle-based company's move last month to launch its unlimited, free Wi-Fi access last month came at a time when many other coffee shops in the industry are now charging for service or taking it away altogether to prevent some customers from setting up their home offices in the stores.
Yahoo, the network's host, also benefits because it’s a strategic move in creating its own identity apart from rivals Google and Bing. Rubin said he wouldn’t be surprised if other Internet search companies such as MSN followed in Yahoo’s footsteps.
“The partnership represents a source of distribution for Yahoo and an opportunity for them to own the front door of the digital experience,” Rubin said.

Hard Choices: Carol Bartz of Yahoo!

Click here to find out more!
I was adamant about not running another company after I left Autodesk (ADSK) in 2006. When I stepped down, I had been CEO for 14 years. We had gone through two or three downturns in the economy, shifts in technology, and the Internet. I just knew it was time to pass the torch.
When Jerry Yang and I were at a Cisco (CSCO) board meeting in 2008, he said, "Would you be interested in the Yahoo! (YHOO) job?" My immediate reaction was, "No. I'm not the right person. Find someone from the media." I was absolutely certain I wouldn't take the job. If I wanted to be a CEO, I would have stayed at Autodesk.
I wasn't sure whether I liked the business, but I was intrigued by the challenge. I didn't come out of this industry, but I didn't come out of the [computer-aided design] industry either when I went to Autodesk. As I explored Yahoo—reluctantly—I realized that what they needed was strong management at the top to streamline the organization and unlock the creativity. The company was siloed. People weren't speaking to each other. I had to be sold on taking the reins again, but the more I thought about Yahoo, the more I could see a role for me there.
I told Jerry and the board that I didn't have a plan, that I wouldn't have one until I got in there. I'm a good listener. I'm not afraid to make a decision, even the wrong one. My motto is "fail fast forward." You can fail, just do it fast and move forward. I think people get better when they fail. It's just the willingness to be wrong.
I didn't realize how much I'd missed the action until I joined. I'm in a different place now. I was totally naive when I went to Autodesk. I was no more a functional CEO than my dog is. That was really learning on the job, but it was a much quieter time in the industry. Nobody was tweeting my every move. I had pressure, but I didn't know what I was doing. This time, I had 17 more years of skills. There are some things age does bring you. I like to talk about careers as a pyramid, not a ladder. With a broad base of experience, you have a sturdier foundation.

Apple iPad, Kindle, Nook War Could Kill Google Editions, Others

Amazon's Kindle, Barnes & Noble's Nook and the Apple iPad are engaged in a three-way war for the e-reader market. But that conflict's casualties could end up being smaller e-reader companies, Google Editions, and Sony’s e-reader franchise.

Rate This Article:
With April’s release of the Apple iPad, and recent software and hardware upgrades for both Amazon.com’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook, the battle for the e-reader market is well and truly joined. Each of those three companies seems equally determined to match the others on a number of competitive fronts, from bookstore size to device features.
Competition, of course, leads to casualties. “I don’t see more than two or maybe three dedicated reading companies in the market for selling ebooks,” William J. Lynch, chief executive of Barnes & Noble, told The New York Times in June. “I think you are starting to see a shake-out now.”
In that spirit, here are three entities who could soon find themselves squeezed out of the e-reader market:
Smaller E-Reader Companies
On Aug. 10, Plastic Logic announced the death of its high-end e-reader, the Que. Originally intended as a device for business travelers and other highly mobile professionals, with an ability to download and display documents in a variety of formats, the Que found itself technologically outpaced even before its release. Although Plastic Logic executives had originally touted the Que’s ability to add comments, highlight text, and search through files, recent software updates from Barnes & Noble and Amazon offered comparable functionality for their own e-readers.
With that in mind, it was difficult for Plastic Logic to justify the Que’s considerable expense: $649 for the 4GB Que, $799 for the 8GB version with WiFi and 3G.
But with Amazon and Barnes & Noble both lowering the costs for the Kindle and Nook, other e-reader manufacturers could soon find their offerings in the proverbial cross-hairs.
“Ebook readers from Barnes & Noble as well as Amazon now are priced at about the break-even level with their Bill of Materials,” William Kidd, director of research firm iSuppli, wrote in a June statement following price-drops for both the Kindle and Nook. “With zero profits on their hardware, both these companies now hope to make their money in this market through sale of books.”
But Amazon and Barnes & Noble can also leverage their existing infrastructure—not to mention their marketing millions—to create the brand awareness necessary to sell millions of ebooks and e-readers through their own digital storefronts. Smaller e-reader manufacturers lack those resources; and that, combined with the pressure to drop their devices’ price-tags to margin-killing levels, will drive many out of business.
Google Editions
For months, the rumor-mill suggested that Google would debut its own e-book service to blunt Amazon’s influence on the market. Termed Google Editions, said service was supposed to launch sometime this summer, in conjunction with partners such as the American Booksellers Association (ABA).
According to the plan, Google Editions would make some 400,000 e-books available to Web-enabled devices such as laptops, tablet PCs, and smartphones. Those volumes would be purchasable directly from Google, via the Google Checkout system. And whereas Amazon and its current rivals offer e-books in a proprietary format, the search engine giant’s own e-bookstore would theoretically offer more freedom over where and how its e-books could be read.
“I don’t think anyone who has bought an e-reader in the last several years has really intended to only buy their digital books from one provider for life,” Tom Turvey, Google Editions’ director for strategic partnerships, told The New York Times.
But the longer Google waits to roll out Google Editions (and the longer it neglects to provide details about how the service will work, in order to build the all-important buzz) the harder its eventual battle against Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple, all of which have been moving aggressively to draw readers to their respective platforms. In that context, Google’s chances of breaking off a substantial portion of the e-book market seem dimmer and dimmer by the week.
Sony E-Readers
On Aug. 11, the tech blog Slashgear posted a story about Sony “apparently looking to Android for its future e-reader plans,” based on a job posting in its Digital Reader Business Division.
The cached version of that job posting, “Senior Staff Software Engineer (Android)—Digital Reader Business Division” can be found here. Responsibilities, apparently, include “developing application software for digital reading and other consumer electronic devices.”
It’s no secret that Sony has fallen behind in the e-reader wars, especially when it comes to mind-share. In July, Sony mirrored its rivals’ price-cuts, dropping the cost of the Sony Reader Pocket Edition to $149, the new Daily Edition to $299, and the Touch Edition to $169. On top of that, Sony recently shined up the design of its Reader Store for ebooks.
But if Sony plans on using Android as the operating system for its future e-readers, it could be tacit acknowledgment that none of its previous steps have been enough; through Android, Sony could conceivably add software features equivalent to those of the ever-more-advanced Kindle and Nook.
That would place Sony smack-dab in the middle of what’s become an extraordinarily competitive space, locking jaws with not only Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the Apple iPad, but also the upcoming Android-based tablet PCs. If Sony were willing to spend millions of dollars to aggressively assert itself in that position, it could translate into a market-share advantage—but Sony seems reluctant to grow fangs in that regard, with anemic e-reader marketing and a follower’s mentality when it comes to pricing and features.
Unlike smaller e-reader manufacturers, though, Sony has millions of dollars to sustain its presence in a product category. That could ensure its placement as an e-reader also-ran—but leaping outright into the fray against its stronger competitors, without the corporate will or marketing push, could result in a costly mess.

Nation observing mourning day

Gopalganj, Aug 15 (bdnews24.com) — Prime minister Sheikh Hasina laid wreathes on the grave of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's grave at Tungipara, Gopalganj at 10am on Sunday as the nation observed National Mourning Day on the 35th death anniversary of the independence leader.

A skilled team of three armed forces gave the Guard of Honour to the architect of Bangladesh's independence. Chiefs of the three armed forces, Hasina's younger sister Rehana and the cabinet members were also present at the occasion.

It is a government holiday with the national flag flying half-mast at official buildings and the Bangladesh missions abroad.

The prime minister, then distributed sewing machines and certificates among trained destitute women. Gopalganj District Association had initiated the training programme.

Hasina, addressing the women present there, saying, "The father of the national wanted to change the people's lot. We are working for that.

"He gave away his life for the economic emancipation of poor and destitute. Bangabandhu wanted the women to be self-dependent," she added.

Programmes to mark the day started by paying tribute to Mujib's mural in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at road 32, Dhanmondi early in the morning.

The president and the prime minister laid wreathes on the mural and the armed forces gsve a Guard of Honour

After that, Hasina also laid floral wreathes on the graves of other victims of the day at Banani graveyard.

Awami League is observing the day by flying the national flag half-mast and hoisting black flag in every party office across the country early in the morning, and is holding day-long programmes to observe the day.

The party paid respect at Bangabandhu Bhaban at 7am, Banani graveyard at 7:30am, and Doa Mahfil took place at Bangabandhu Bhaban at 11 am.

Prayers in the temples, pagoda and churches will also be held to mark the day.

A discussion meeting, involving all representing all religions, took placeat the National Press Club at 10:30am and there was another discussion meeting at Dhaka University Teacher Student Centre auditorium at 10am.

Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast special programmes on the day. The national dailies will publish special supplements.

This year the day is being observed in a different context as five murderers of Mujib were hanged on Jan 28 following their convictions and decisions of the Supreme Court.

Six other former army officials convicted in their absence are still on the run and one other died abroad.

August 15 day was observed for the first time at state-level after the Awami League formed its government in 1996.

The caretaker government in 2001 also observed the day.

But BNP-led four party alliance government cancelled the decision of celebrating the day at state-level.

It was restored as National Mourning Day in 2008 following a High Court order after a gap of six-years under the BNP-led government.

MUJIB'S LIFE

Mujib was born on Mar 17, 1920 at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

He came to limelight with the formation of Purba Pakistan Chhatra League following the end of British rule in the Indian sub-continent.

Mujib continued to rise in national politics because of his active involvement in the language movement in 1952, 1954 general elections, and six-point declaration in 1966. His arrest in the Agarata conspiracy case catapulted him into the national limelight, making him the undisputed leader of the Bengali's freedom struggle against Pakistani exploitation.

He was given the title of 'Bangabandhu' - friend of the Bengal- after he was freed from jail in 1969.

On Mar 7, 1971 Mujib delivered the historical speech at Racecourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan), which inspired the countrymen to join the war of independence.

A handful of renegade army officials on Aug 15, 1975 killed Mujib along with his wife Begum Fazilatunnesa, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel, daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal Khuki and Parveen Jamal Rosy, Mujib's younger brother Sheikh Abu Naser, nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, Moni's pregnant wife Begum Arju Moni, Mujib's brother-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat, Serniabat's daughter, son, nephew and grandson, Mujib's security chief Col Jamiluddin Ahmed, three guests and four domestic workers.

Mujib's daughter prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, were in Europe and thus escaped the massacre on that fateful night.

SATURDAY'S MESSAGES FROM PRESIDENT AND PRIME MINISTER

President Zillur Rahman, in a message on Saturday, called on the nation to work together for the success of the government's Charter for Change, in which, he said, Sheikh Mujib's dreams lay for the nation.

"Sheikh Mujib dreamt a dream of a 'Golden Bangladesh'. The spirit of Mujib will rest in peace if his dreams come true. We have the duty to fulfil the dreams, "said Zillur.

The president also said, "The nation is free from disgrace as some of the murderers have been punished. We have to try our best to punish those hiding overseas."

In another message Sheikh Hasina echoed the president's sentiment, saying, "We have taken steps to bring back the fugitives."

"Murderers killed Sheikh Mujib. But they couldn't kill his dreams. We have to make 'Sonar Bangla' of Mujib free from poverty, illiteracy and hunger," said Hasina.

The prime minister urged the people to be aware of those who tried to thwart war crimes trial and actions against corruption through conspiracy and anarchy.

She also said, "Steps have been taken for quick trial of the killing of four national leaders."

Govt writes to foreign govts for deporting Bangabandhu’s killers: FM

DHAKA:  Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni Sunday said the government has sent letters to different foreign governments asking their support for return of the “condemned killers” of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“We have sent formal letters to the governments of the countries wherein the convicted killers are absconding or might have been residing,” she told journalists after a function arranged by Kendriyo Kochi Kachar Mela marking the National Mourning Day.

National mourning day being observed

DHAKA: The National Mourning Day, commemorating the 35th anniversary of Bangabandhu’s tragic assassination, is being observed across the country on Sunday.

Hundreds of leaders and activists of Awami League and its front organisations as well as people of different walks of life paid homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman marking the day.

They placed wreaths at his portrait at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi and at the graves of his family members and other martyrs at Banani graveyard in the morning.

Earlier, President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the ruling Awami League president, paid rich tributes to Bangabandhu placing wreaths at his portrait at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Sunday morning.

They stood in solemn silences as the army bugle played the last post. Cabinet members, chiefs of three services and senior civil and military officials were also present.

Fateha and special munajat were offered seeking salvation of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members.

Hasina also placed a separate wreath at Mujib’s portrait at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum as the Awami League chief along with the party leaders.

The prime minister spent some time at her father’s Dhanmondi house where Bangabandhu was assassinated in a military putsch on August 15, 1975, along with most of his family members.

The predawn attacks left a total of 24 people killed. Bangabandhu’s two daughters -- Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana -- could escape the bloodbath as they were abroad at the time.

The Prime Minister also placed wreaths at the graves of her family members and other martyrs at Banani Graveyard at 7:30am.

Later, Sheikh Hasina, one of the two surviving daughters of Bangabandhu Hasina reached Tungipara and offered prayers at his gravesite along with the members of the party working committee, advisory council and the cabinet colleagues.

Meanwhile, the Mahila Awami League held a special prayer session at Bangabandhu Bhaban.
